About US

Hozhoni Weekend - September 10-12, 2010

Hozhoni is a Navajo word meaning “completed circle of harmony.” The American Cancer Society Hozhoni Weekend began in 1986 with 12 families. It has grown to include 30-40 families per year with a volunteer staff of 40.

The American Cancer Society Hozhoni Weekend cancer camp provides a supportive and recreational environment for children and their families dealing with childhood cancer. From the beginning, the American Cancer Society has promoted the concept that childhood cancer affects the entire family unit. While the children participate in hands-on activities to develop creativity, physical endurance, mental challenges, and team building, the adults gain mutual support and understanding of childhood cancer family issues through support groups led by professionals. Families are offered the opportunity to come together to build a family project and they take part in a cookout, dance and campfire skits and sing-a-longs.

Families that take part in Hozhoni Weekend find that the event brings them together and builds personal strength. They appreciate the opportunity to meet families from across the state and share common experiences . Families that attend Hozhoni have children at all stages of the disease.

Benefits to participants:

  • Better understanding of childhood cancer issues
  • Opportunities to meet and exchange thoughts and feelings
  • Increased capability of coping with the disease and its challenges
  • Improved communication between family members and health care providers
  • Less hopelessness, more hope
